It’s Mintage Monday time!
Today, I’m once again again talking about using real currency as board game money. In this instance, it’s Ukrainian coinage!
A long time ago, shortly after I published Board Games and Metal Coins, An Obsession, I had a lot of people replying to tell me about using Ukrainian kopiyoks as board game coinage. They could be bought cheap, looked super nice, and were nearly “themeless” in this context. So, I decided to give them a try.
Right now I have them in Camel Up, because you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find reasonably priced Egyptian-themed coins.
All of the positives listed above are true, but most people leave out the one major negative: The coins are TINY. The 1s and 10s – two of the most common and useful denominations – are smaller and thinner than a dime, which actually makes them harder to use than the punchboard coins.
I can’t really critique real coinage the same way I can fake, except to say: In spite of being insanely cheap, these coins aren’t really an upgrade, and I can’t recommend them. ?
