Okay, so I missed Mintage Monday yesterday. That’s on me. But I’ll make up for it with a Treasure Tuesday! (That’s absolutely going to end up the hashtag that only shows up when I’ve been forgetful. Right alongside Wealth Wednesday or Fiver Friday or somesuch.) We’re back with Artana Games again this week, this time with two coins from their “Pirate” theme, and I’m using them for my copy of Archipelago.

Archipelago is probably the most unflinchingly Western-colonization-themed game in existence (which, I understand, may turn some people off). I wanted coins that would fit a 1700’s nautical aesthetic. The other coins in this set were a little too skull-and-crossbones than what I wanted (although colonizers are really just another form of pirate), but these two coins specifically felt more simply maritime.

As always, Artana’s coins are spectacular, and add an aesthetic boost in the one place Archipelago is terribly under-produced: its included coinage. For a game as beautiful as this one, the included chipboard coins are surprisingly chintzy, but these metal coins really add a punch that’s more in line with the rest of the game’s production values.
