A few years ago I built one of my first foamcore inserts, for Ticket to Ride. It was functional, but really inelegant. The storage box for the trains was pretty crap, to be honest. When I tried to replace it, I couldn’t actually make enough room in the foamcore to make boxes for each individual color.
So I had to come up with something else.
Over the last couple of years I’ve entirely stopped making foamcore anything in favor of doing custom work in chipboard. I used all of the skills I developed working on my custom box project to make a completely new storage solution for Ticket to Ride, eschewing an insert entirely in favor of a set of custom boxes.
This setup currently holds base TTR, U.S.A. 1910, Europe, Europa 1912, and the first three map packs (Team Asia/Legendary Asia, India/Switzerland, and The Heart of Africa).
The box to hold all the boards is just a holdover from my original foamcore design (I have to keep the boards and components in separate boxes). The card boxes are constructed using the method outlined in my custom card box tutorial. The train boxes are constructed using the method in my two-piece bit box tutorial. The card rack is a heavily modified version of a two-piece bit box, and is probably one of my most complex constructions to date, mostly because the angles on the rack and lid severely complicated the application of the graphics wrap.
Here are the pretty, pretty pictures:
