There is something that has always bothered me about card-stock game boards. They mostly turn up as player boards, like in Castles of Burgundy or Kingsburg. In most cases, I laminate boards like this for protection and durability.
A new obsession started with Roll for the Galaxy. There was something just… weird, to me, about how the Home and Planet tiles were nice chipboard pieces, but the player mat was card-stock. To bring them “up to code”, I mounted the player mats and phase strips to chipboard. Now, a player’s planet tiles can be butted up against their player mat, and they’ll be the same height. To me, it’s more aesthetically pleasing.
I know. It’s a nonsensical annoyance. It’s completely irrational.
But it led to some inspiration today, while I was laminating the player mats for Dead of Winter. The locations are actual game boards, and it bothered me that they were a different material and thickness than the main game board.
So, I snapped some pictures of the location backs, cleaned them up in Photoshop, and printed them on nice photo paper. Then, I mounted the main boards to chip board, mounted the new backs to the opposite side, and trimmed them down to make nice, chunky location boards that are the same thickness as the main game board.
I know. It’s probably a pretty singular compulsion in this hobby, but it’s a craft I enjoy.
TL;DR: I made nice, mounted Location boards for Dead of Winter.

EDIT: A Reddit user requested pics of the mounted boards for Roll for the Galaxy. For those, I didn’t create an image for the back-side, I simply mounted the boards to chipboard and trimmed them.
